At Motion Twin, we’d already been using branches for our alpha and beta test pools.įor the Legacy Update we simply created 16 different branches, one for each major version of Dead Cells.Īgain, easy - though not exactly elegant. You’re probably familiar with Steam’s beta branches, a feature theoretically meant for internal testing or maybe for players to access an upcoming update early. Now how do you do it? It’s easy, albeit a bit of an unofficial hack. It helps to know why you made certain decisions before changing them again, and the archive’s allowed us to check our own work, trace a line between past and present - even settle disputes, on a few occasions. There’s an old adage, Chesterton’s Fence, that essentially states that if you come across a fence you should figure out why it’s there before tearing it down. We’ve also found the archive a useful resource, as we get further and further into development on Dead Cells. Psychologically, it’s an interesting change though. We like to think we’re pretty good stewards, and that we’d make the tough calls even without the Legacy Update. Whether it will actually have an effect on day-to-day development? It’s hard to say. There’s a creative freedom that comes from knowing any change we make can be easily reverted by naysayers. Players are no longer shackled to our vision, which in turn means we can experiment with elements of Dead Cells that before seemed untouchable-or at least volatile. The Legacy Update doesn’t completely remove that stress, but it does diminish it. Should we make the “right” choice for Dead Cells, even if in doing so we made a lot of our players angry? (See: The hornet’s nest we kicked over by locking achievements for certain custom mode setups.) Major updates were stressful though, especially ones we thought might fundamentally alter the game or prove contentious. With the Legacy Update, that more difficult 1.0 experience is readily available for those who want it. Others disagreed, and they did so quite loudly. People noticed - or at least, a hardcore subset of fans noticed. After much internal debate we decided to do a massive balance pass, effectively dropping the default difficulty to make Dead Cells more approachable to newcomers. That was the big tentpole feature for 1.1, but there was more to it. In fact, one of our most contentious changes came after we left Early Access and released the 1.1 update, now colloquially known as the Pimp My Run update because it added a Custom Game mode to Dead Cells. There, too, you have a divide between “The Game People Paid For” and “The Game That Exists,” one that only grows wider the longer you support a project, the more you add or tweak or disable. Problems arise when those visions clash, when our decisions not only don’t match player desires but also “ruin” the game for certain players. But people are buying into not just the game that exists but the game they think will exist a year, two years, even five years down the line. After all, Dead Cells is our game, and we’re going to do what we think is best. Developing a game in public entails giving up a bit of ownership. Player feedback informed many of our decisions, both big and small, and Dead Cells would be different (and probably worse) if we hadn’t collaborated with our fans.įeedback isn’t free, though. Early Access was important to the development of Dead Cells. I have made a conscious effort to use this as an extra step in my makeup routine to see if the hype about colour correcting is warranted. Rimmel have really surprised me on this one, and I’ve been reaching for it a lot recently. I know because it is Rimmel it won’t be breaking the bank to repurchase like the KKW ones, but it’s still a slight inconvenience. Mostly because I forget to apply it after my contour, but still! The big thing that worries me is that I seem to have gone through a lot of product in the short time of using it. I will say however, not once have I reached for the highlight side. I don’t think it’s really necessary to have two shades of contour on either side of the stick, so I’m quite happy with the duo. I’m sure that was all a coincidence but it is pretty much the same idea, but with less choice. It reminded me of Kim Kardshian West’s new beauty product, her cream contour kits, especially with the nude packaging. I surprisingly really enjoyed this product! The contour side worried me because I thought it would be way too warm toned to use as a contour, but it looked fine to me and it applied like a dream. It does the job, but there are others that I would reach for over this one. I’m not sure the powder is completely to blame, because it could just be my concealer but it was something I noticed. It did set my makeup nicely, but I did notice some creasing under neath my eye area. As far as setting powders go, I’m used to using a loose powder rather than a pressed one, so it was tempting to go ham with my brush. I enjoy this, although I’m pretty sure it has a strong scent, which confused me. When I bought these, they were on 3 for 2 in Boots, so I basically picked up the setting powder for free, which is great! Because it’s Rimmel, everything is reasonably priced too. I picked up 3 products, the setting powder, the contour stick and the colour correcting palette. It consists of a Fix & Go Setting Spray, Fix & Matte Setting Powder, Duo Contour Stick, a liquid illuminator, Conceal & Contour Palette as well as a Conceal & Correct Palette. In the new Insta range, Rimmel have launched quite a few new products. I am a fan of their lipsticks and nail polish, but I wouldn’t say it’s anything to write home about. I don’t know what it is about the brand, but I’ve just never found a product that has really impressed me. I will be the first to admit that I am not Rimmel’s biggest fan. Having seen a lot of buzz around the new Rimmel launch, I decided to try some of the stuff out for myself. This means that the lower yaw rate makes flying more consistent. When flying with high camera up-tilt (as many racers do), the yaw axis is used much less to maneuver, instead, relying on mostly pitch and roll to control altitude and position, with throttle to control overall speed. For the most part, racers fly with a maximum rate of 300-700 degrees per second on all axes. This allows for greater control of fine movements around the track, translating to faster lap times. However, there are a few established rate profiles that the pros use, which have been successfully used by many racers around the world.Īlthough initially counterintuitive, the rates that racers normally use are much lower than those of freestyle pilots. Again, the “feel” method can apply here as well. Exotic flips and rolls, yaw spins and other tricks are seldom flown, instead, having most of the attention directed towards standard race maneuvers, such as the split-s, corkscrew, and slalom. RacingįPV racers fly rather differently than freestyle pilots. This also allows for tricks such as yaw-spins to be performed reliably and precisely. Many freestyle pilots prefer to have a higher yaw rate, or a slightly higher pitch/roll rate to account for muscle memory. One note to keep in mind is that your pitch/roll/yaw axes do not need to be completely identical. I found that using the fixed quadcopter position in FPV Air 2 was helpful. In a sense, now the FPV video serves to help you navigate through your surroundings, rather than a tool to pull off tricks. This is more reliable than flying tricks based on “look” because it means that the added latency of having to recognize when the quad has finished rotating in your goggles as well as latency in the radio system and electronics can be ignored (to some extent), since the actual flip/roll has already been performed on the sticks without much aid of the FPV feed. A good place to try this is either in a large field or an FPV simulator.Įventually, once this is done on all axes, the quad should respond on “feel”. A good rule of thumb to keep is to close your eyes, perform a roll, and adjust your rates depending on how close you were to a perfect 360 degrees. Adjust and tune your roll rate so that the quad rotates one revolution exactly how it felt previously. In general, most freestyle pilots prefer a maximum rate of 400-1000 degrees per second on all axes.įirst off, move the roll stick a certain amount that you should expect the quad to do a full revolution (the same can be applied for a half revolution or certain trick). When starting out tuning rates, I recommend using the default rates that came with either your quad (if it was an RTF) or the configurator. There are a variety of different ways to approach rate tuning for a freestyle quad, but the most reliable method is to adjust to muscle memory. Steele is an excellent example of what FPV freestyle looks like: Most of the time, higher rates are needed to perform tricks fast enough. Pilots spend countless hours perfecting tricks and getting them to flow together, often recording footage via high-definition cameras, such as GoPros.
